Iron Supplements
Pregnancy Anaemia demand iron supplements
But, could the use of iron supplements in pregnancy be predisposing women to diabetes? A study from Italy published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology says so.
A study from Turin, Italy, published recently has raised concerns about the supplementation with iron in pregnancy. The use of iron (and folic acid) supplements is commonplace for very good reasons. Iron is essential for the manufacture of blood haemoglobin in the mother and baby, prevents anaemia in both and also is associated with lower incidence of small babies.
Iron supplements – a real dilemma
The study recently published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology identifies a 2-3 fold increased risk of pregnancy related diabetes and high blood pressure among women on iron supplements. This raised a number of challenges for women and their carers because diabetes is such a dreadful condition in pregnancy and yet anaemia is to be avoided.
These findings deserve further scrutiny and discussion between pregnant women and their carers; weighing pros and cons before abandoning well established useful practices such the use of iron especially where indicated.
