Research into improving recovery after caesarean sections continues. One key area attracting attention is finding ways to promote quicker bowel action and discharge from hospital. Researchers in Egypt have shown that women who chewed gum hours after a caesarean section resumed bowel action earlier and were discharge from hospital earlier than women who did not.
Caesarean section operation leads to slow bowel
The role chewing gum has been extensively investigated in many areas of bowel surgery. This is the one of a number that have shown a beneficial effect after caesarean operation under general anaesthesia.
This simple research tackles an important problem for women who undergo operative deliveries. Indeed this simple and safe intervention should be considered by women undergoing caesarean in all maternity units.
